What is Male Circumcision and How Does it Impact Health & Well-Being?

Updated: Jul 19

One of the least talked about but also one of the crucial topics that everyone should be aware of, especially the men of our society is “Male Circumcision”. Therefore, to understand the concept in simple language, circumcision is removing the foreskin that covers the end of the penis with a surgical procedure.

This is a cultural and religious practice that has been performed for thousands of years in many parts of the world, including India. The procedure is usually performed on newborns or young boys and is often carried out for religious, cultural, or health reasons.

Medical Reasons for Male Circumcision

  • Phimosis or tight foreskin

This is a condition where the foreskin is so tight that it is difficult to pull it back over the penis head. Due to the tightness of the foreskin, the individual might suffer from pain during erection.

  • Paraphimosis

Another condition in which the foreskin does not return to the original position when it is pulled backward. And this leads to pain and swelling on the head of the penis.

  • Recurrent balanitis

When the head of the penis becomes inflamed or infected, it is a condition called recurrent balanitis.

Impact of Male Circumcision on health and well being

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the health impact of male circumcision on overall well-being. Here’s what you need to be aware of:

1 Reduced risk of sexually transmitted infections:

Studies have shown that male circumcision can reduce the risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, HPV, and herpes. This is because the foreskin is more susceptible to tears and abrasions, which can provide a pathway for infection.

2 Lower rates of urinary tract infections:

Circumcision in infancy can reduce the risk of urinary tract infections in boys, which can lead to kidney damage if left untreated.

3 Improved hygiene:

Circumcision can make it easier to keep the penis clean, which can reduce the risk of infection and other health problems.

4 Reduced risk of penile cancer:

Some studies suggest that circumcision may reduce the risk of penile cancer, although the evidence is not conclusive.

5 Potential risks and complications:

As with any surgical procedure, circumcision carries risks such as bleeding, infection, and complications with anesthesia. It is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits with a healthcare provider.

When it comes to taking a decision that is about such a delicate matter, taking advice from an experienced healthcare professional will help you to understand the process. However, it is essential to weigh the potential risks and complications before deciding to undergo the procedure.
